The Knights Templar, belonging to the religious order of Christian chivalry (with its own statutes) which was entrusted with the care and protection of pilgrims in the Holy Land; they excelled for their possessions in the cities of Apulia, a region that has always been in a strategic and prominent position for trade between West and East, and hosted the first Hierosolymitan red-cross houses. In the route that goes from West to the Holy Land the Templars organized some crusader leaving from the ports of Apulia. In this strategic role of the area Barletta distinguished itself for the seat of the Grand Preceptor of Southern Italy, remained in vogue until the fall of the order occurred in 1312.
